ITINERARY

We begin our journey at the magnificent Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula, one of Brussels’ most important examples of Brabantine Gothic architecture. Built principally between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Cathedral has witnessed some of the most important religious and royal events in Belgian history. Inside, impressive stained-glass windows, monumental columns, sculptures, chapels and historic tombs reveal centuries of faith, art and political power. Along the way, I will share some of the fascinating stories and legends connected with this remarkable building.

From the Cathedral, we continue towards the magnificent Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries, one of Europe’s most elegant historic shopping arcades. Designed by architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaer and officially opened in 1847, the ensemble consists of three glazed galleries – the King’s Gallery, Queen’s Gallery and Princes’ Gallery – lined with boutiques, cafés, restaurants and cultural venues. Their spectacular glass roof and refined 19th-century architecture made them one of Brussels’ most fashionable meeting places almost from the moment they opened.

A short walk brings us to the breathtaking Grand-Place, the historic heart of Brussels and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominated by the magnificent Gothic Town Hall, the Maison du Roi and richly decorated guild houses, the square reflects centuries of commerce, civic power and artistic ambition. Much of the Grand-Place was devastated during the French bombardment of Brussels in 1695 and magnificently rebuilt in the years that followed, creating the extraordinary architectural ensemble we admire today. We will also discover the story behind Brussels’ famous Flower Carpet, first created on the Grand-Place in 1971 and now traditionally presented every two years around the weekend of 15 August. Opposite the Town Hall stands the impressive Maison du Roi, or Broodhuis, which today houses the Brussels City Museum and the original 17th-century Manneken Pis.

From the Grand-Place, we continue through the narrow streets of the historic centre towards Brussels’ most mischievous little celebrity – Manneken Pis. The famous bronze figure created by Jérôme Duquesnoy the Elder in 1619 has become far more than a fountain decoration: over the centuries, he has developed into a symbol of Brussels’ humour, independence and irreverent spirit. We will uncover some of the legends surrounding him and discover why this tiny figure became one of Belgium’s most recognisable landmarks.

Along the way, we pass traditional Belgian fries shops, waffle stands, chocolate boutiques and inviting cafés, offering plenty of opportunities for an optional refreshment.

We then climb towards the elegant Mont des Arts, where landscaped gardens and panoramic views connect Brussels’ historic lower town with its Royal Quarter. Along the way, we pass important cultural landmarks including the Royal Library of Belgium and the Palace of Charles of Lorraine before reaching Place Royale.

At Place Royale, Brussels takes on a completely different character. The elegant neoclassical square is dominated by the equestrian statue of Godfrey of Bouillon and the Church of Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg, whose present 18th-century building forms an integral part of the architectural ensemble. Beneath the square lie the archaeological remains of the former Coudenberg Palace, once one of Europe’s most important princely residences and closely associated with Emperor Charles V.

Nearby, we admire the Royal Palace of Brussels and learn about the Belgian monarchy, from the foundation of the kingdom in 1830–1831 to the present day. Opposite the palace lies Brussels Park, the historic green heart of the Royal Quarter.

Our journey then continues along Rue de la Régence towards the magnificent Church of Our Lady of Victories at the Sablon, one of Brussels’ finest Gothic churches. Built largely during the 15th century and historically associated with the city’s crossbowmen, nobility and wealthy families, the church is renowned for its elegant architecture, stained-glass windows and richly decorated chapels.

The historical tour concludes in the charming Square du Petit Sablon, an elegant late-19th-century garden surrounded by 48 bronze figures representing the historic guilds of Brussels. At its centre stands the monument to the Counts of Egmont and Horn, whose execution on the Grand-Place in 1568 became one of the defining episodes in the struggle against Spanish rule in the Low Countries. It is a fitting place to conclude our journey through centuries of Brussels history.
