More information
We begin our walking adventure through historic Ghent near Wijdenaard Bridge, with the magnificent Saint Bavo’s Cathedral as our first major stop. From here, we step straight into more than a thousand years of Ghent’s fascinating history.
The impressive Saint Bavo’s Cathedral is one of the great landmarks of the city. Developed into its present Gothic form principally during the 15th and 16th centuries, the cathedral preserves extraordinary treasures from Ghent’s religious and artistic past. Charles V, one of the most powerful Holy Roman Emperors, was baptised here in 1500, when the church was still dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
Inside, admire the cathedral’s monumental arches, impressive Rococo pulpit, Baroque high altar, historic tombs and remarkable works of art by masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Frans Pourbus the Elder and Gaspar de Crayer. Its greatest treasure is the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece, formally known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, begun by Hubert van Eyck and completed by his brother Jan in 1432. Considered one of the great masterpieces of early Netherlandish art, its extraordinary detail, symbolism and turbulent history make it one of Belgium’s most fascinating artistic treasures.
We then continue through Ghent’s charming historic centre, passing several prominent landmarks including the Monument to Jan Frans Willems, the Royal Dutch Theatre, the former Guild House of Saint George and Ghent’s remarkable City Hall, whose contrasting façades reflect different architectural periods. Nearby rise the impressive 14th-century Belfry, the modern City Pavilion and the fascinating Gothic Saint Nicholas’ Church.
Our walk brings us to Korenmarkt, one of the liveliest squares in the historic centre. Surrounded by impressive historic buildings that today house cafés, restaurants and terraces, it has long been one of the great meeting places of Ghent and remains an ideal spot to experience the atmosphere of the city.
From Korenmarkt, we continue towards Saint Michael’s Bridge, one of the finest viewpoints in Ghent. From here, enjoy magnificent views over the River Leie, the historic waterfront and Ghent’s famous skyline of medieval towers. Nearby stands the late Gothic Saint Michael’s Church, whose history and remarkable religious treasures add another fascinating chapter to our journey through the city.
We then descend towards the beautiful Graslei and Korenlei, Ghent’s famous historic quays along the River Leie. Their richly decorated guild houses and former merchant buildings recall the period when Ghent was one of medieval Europe’s most important commercial cities. Today, the waterfront is one of the most atmospheric places in Ghent and also a popular starting point for boat trips along the city’s canals.
A little farther along, we cross the attractive Grasbrug and Hoofdbrug and enjoy a splendid panorama of the imposing medieval Gravensteen – Castle of the Counts. Once the residence of the Counts of Flanders, this remarkable fortress was later used as a court, prison, mint and even an industrial complex. We will discover its extraordinary history and some of the fascinating legends associated with one of Ghent’s most impressive medieval landmarks.
From Gravensteen, we gradually make our way back through the lively historic centre, crossing Lievebrug and Vleeshuisbrug before arriving at Groentenmarkt, the historic vegetable market. Today, this atmospheric square and its surroundings are a wonderful place to discover local delicacies, sweet treats, regional products and, during certain periods, arts and crafts.
We then continue through a labyrinth of charming streets and alleys, including Ghent’s colourful Graffiti Street, where constantly changing street art provides a striking contrast to the medieval architecture surrounding it.
From here, we enter the picturesque Patershol neighbourhood, one of the most atmospheric historic quarters of Ghent. Its narrow streets and medieval layout seem to transport us back in time, while historic houses, specialist shops, art galleries, cosy restaurants and traditional pubs create a unique character. This is one of those parts of Ghent where history and contemporary city life blend effortlessly together.
After exploring Patershol, we continue towards the impressive Saint James’ Church. The first wooden church on this site dates back to 1093, and for centuries the church has been associated with pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela. Its long history and varied architecture make it another fascinating witness to Ghent’s medieval past.
Nearby lies Vrijdagmarkt, one of the largest and most historic squares in Ghent, whose name literally means “Friday Market.” Markets have been held here for centuries, but the square has also witnessed political gatherings, celebrations and some of the most dramatic moments in the city’s history. At its centre stands the imposing monument to Jacob van Artevelde, the influential 14th-century statesman closely associated with Ghent’s prosperity and textile trade.
Vrijdagmarkt is also home to some of Ghent’s best-known cafés, pubs and restaurants, including the famous Dulle Griet, renowned for its enormous selection of Belgian beers. If you would like to continue enjoying Ghent after the tour, this lively square is an excellent place to discover the city’s beer culture and bring your historical adventure to a memorable conclusion.

Ghent Altarpiece – The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb
The greatest artistic treasure of Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and one of the masterpieces of European art. Created by Hubert and Jan van Eyck and completed in 1432, the monumental altarpiece is famous for its extraordinary detail, symbolism and fascinating history.
Entrance: €12.50 per person for the Ghent Altarpiece only, or €16 per person including the augmented-reality experience.
For the Altarpiece itself, I recommend allowing approximately 30 additional minutes. For the complete augmented-reality visitor experience, allow approximately 60 minutes. Advance reservation is strongly recommended.
Belfry of Ghent
The magnificent medieval Belfry rises above the historic centre and forms part of Ghent’s famous skyline of three towers. A visit offers wonderful panoramic views over the city and an opportunity to discover more about Ghent’s medieval civic independence.
Entrance: €13 per person.
I recommend allowing approximately 45–60 additional minutes.
Gravensteen – Castle of the Counts
One of Ghent’s most impressive medieval monuments, Gravensteen was once the residence of the Counts of Flanders and later served as a court, prison, mint and industrial complex. Inside, visitors can explore its towers, battlements, historic rooms and collections while enjoying impressive views over the city.
Entrance: €15 per person.
I recommend allowing approximately 60–90 additional minutes. The admission ticket includes the castle’s audio guide.

Entrance: €11 per person.
I recommend allowing approximately 45–60 additional minutes.
Museum of Industry
Ghent played an important role in the Industrial Revolution on the European continent, particularly through its textile industry. Housed in a former cotton mill, the Museum of Industry tells the story of factories, machinery, workers, textiles and the enormous changes brought by industrialisation.
Entrance: €13 per person.
I recommend allowing approximately 1–1½ additional hours. As the museum is located relatively close to Vrijdagmarkt, where the walking tour concludes, it can also be conveniently visited independently after the tour.
A BOAT TRIP ON THE GHENT CANALS
A canal boat trip is another wonderful way to experience Ghent and can be the perfect continuation of your historical walking tour.
Several boat companies operate regular cruises through Ghent’s historic waterways, with convenient departure points around the Graslei, Korenlei, Groentenmarkt and the area near Gravensteen. The captain normally provides commentary during the journey, allowing you to admire Ghent’s historic buildings, bridges and picturesque waterfront from an entirely different perspective.
Regular boat trips currently cost approximately €15 per person.
For planning purposes, I recommend allowing approximately 45–60 minutes in total, including boarding and possible waiting time.
If you would like to enjoy a boat trip after your walking tour, I will be happy to advise you about the most convenient departure point and the available options on the day of your visit.
A canal cruise is a relaxing and memorable way to finish your journey through historic Ghent.
